Since the invention of wrapping paper, its form has remained largely unchanged apart from variations in patterns. We rethink the purpose of wrapping paper and its relationship with people, approaching it from a human-centered design perspective. By considering different usage scenarios and experimenting with paper structures, patterns, and materials, we explore new possibilities for wrapping paper.

ICONS

We have designed seven series of wrapping paper: Unusually Reusable, Unusually Structural, Unusually Tactile, Unusually Useful, Unusually Fun, Unusually Hard to Find, and Unusually Secretive. To help users easily understand the purpose and characteristics of each series, we created 24 unique icons representing different types of wrapping paper.

Unusually reusable wrapping paper

By collecting large amounts of leftover paper edges from print shops and reconstructing them through weaving and patchwork techniques, these tiny scraps of paper are given a renewed sense of value and purpose.

Unusually structural wrapping paper

By altering the original qualities of paper through creative techniques such as cutting and embossing, creates new possibilities for the use of wrapping paper.

Unusually tactile wrapping paper

A series of posters advocating for zero fur, doubling as functional wrapping paper. By recreating the appearance and texture of animal fur through paper structures, the design offers both visual appeal and a tactile experience, exploring humane alternatives to real fur.

Unusually useful wrapping paper

Have you ever experienced not being able to find the right tools when trying to wrap a present? Or not knowing which size of wrapping paper is enough for your gift? Or when trying to mail your present, not being sure if it fits the allowed dimensions? The Unusually Useful Wrapping Paper series can help solve all these problems, allowing for a faster and more efficient wrapping process.

Unusually fun wrapping paper

The lack of common topics can sometimes lead to an awkward silence when gathering with unfamiliar friends.
By integrating various games into wrapping paper design, this series helps break the ice effortlessly, encouraging interaction and connection between each other.

Unusually hard to find wrapping paper

We adopted a creative approach to avoid awkward situations at parties, such as only having one gift prepared when others are present.
Unusually hard to find wrapping paper combines common clothing patterns, seamlessly blending with everyday attire. This allows gift givers to discreetly hide presents within the patterns, without attracting attention, so that gifts are given away unnoticed.

Unusually secretive wrapping paper

When giving a gift, some feelings are hard to put into words, and the messages we wish to express may be difficult to say outright. Unusually secretive wrapping paper series subtly conveys complex emotions in an ingenious way, speaking volumes without saying a word.
