Cai Guo-Qiang is a well-known contemporary Chinese artist who is famous worldwide for his innovative gunpowder art. The unpredictability of gunpowder is at the heart of his work—he blends the randomness of explosions with his own creativity, turning uncontrollable moments into part of his art and embracing the uncertainties of life.

Inspired by his approach, I designed the exhibition experience to get visitors involved before it started. They can draw their own ignition lines on the exhibition’s website, which will then be projected onto the exhibition walls and explode at random times—just like the unpredictability in Cai Guo-Qiang’s work. The unique patterns from the explosions will be printed onto their tickets, so each visitor gets a one-of-a-kind, personalized ticket.
